FUTURE TRUCKS

We've seen the future of trucks - and it's yellow.

But the vibrant colour of these vehicles isn't the only bright thing about the future of trucking.

Chinese designer Haishan Deng, 29, has completely rethought the humble lorry with his two designs - the Super Tipper Truck and the Chameleon Truck.

THE SUPER TIPPER TRUCK

The Super Tipper Truck solves the problem of normal trucks that are only able to unload backwards or sideways. The new design means it can be unloaded in four directions and on almost any uneven surface, thanks to four independent suspension arms.

Haishan has achieved this manoeuvrability by doing away with the traditional central drivetrain, where a large motor and gearbox would sit, instead powering the vehicle by in-wheel electric motors.

"I set out to find a 'new way' for this important equipment of construction," explains Haishan. "The concept concentrates on enabling more possibilities for the loading and unloading process.

"The traditional design of a tipper requires a lot of time for the driver to position the truck for unloading. The Super Tipper Truck solves this problem as it can be unloaded to four directions, and is much easier to get into the right position, particularly for precise positioning of the load. For example, it can be driven down into a pit and unload materials directly."

The Super Tipper can also load some materials such as sand, mud and concrete by itself.

"The drivers cockpit can be raised to allow the tipper to scoop materials up by being driven forward," says Haishan.

THE CHAMELEON TRUCK

The Chameleon Truck is a cargo transport that uses an innovative segmented body to change its shape according to requirements. The padded fabric-covered cargo bay means you can adjust the size of the truck to the volume of cargo you are carrying.

The resilient soft tarpaulin shelled body is strong enough to protect its cargo but also absorbs impacts in case of accidents.

The driver's seat is high up, which allows for improved visibility, and also comes in handy when the driver unloads his cargo himself; the cargo bay sliding out from under him automatically.

Innovative designer Haishan, who lives in Guangzhou, southern China, is beginning to make a name for himself in the automotive design world after taking third place in the first China Automobile Design Competition.

He is now looking for a company based in either Europe or the US that can use his talents.
