SUPERCOOL ICE JEWELLERY

An artist has created some supercool jewellery - made from ice!

Forget diamonds, the new ice to be seen wearing comes from 24-year-old Katharina Ludwig.

The Dutch artist has made a range of jewellery that is so unique it can only be worn once - mainly because it melts away as you wear it.

Katharina's rings, necklaces and earrings are made from silver but replace precious jewels with frozen water to stunning effect.

The results are one-of-kind pieces that can only be enjoyed for as long as the ambient temperature takes to thaw the ice. The wearer is then left with a simple silver adornment.

"If water itself is worn as a jewel the preciousness of water is enhanced," explains Katharina. "Put on the body it will melt by the body warmth."

Katharina says the effect of the ice on the wearer's skin and clothes is also part of the ice jewellery experience.

"What will stay is just the core of it and the marks the ice leave at your skin," she says. "The ice earrings leave traces on your clothes while the earring is melting, the jewel appears on your shoulder instead on your ear. The other one gathers a bit of water after melting in a little cup."

Katharina's ice necklaces slowly extend to full size as more of the chain is released from the frozen ice block 'jewel'.

"The chain is guided in a special way and frozen into ice cubes and shapes," she explains "Melted the chain extends to its full size."

Wearing these trinkets will make certainly make you the coolest on the (ice)block.
