Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge over the River Thames that has become an iconic symbol of London. A busy and vital crossing of the Thames: the bridge is crossed by over 40,000 people (motorists and pedestrians) every day. Its two bascules, which weigh over 1,000 tons each, are raised around 1000 times a year to allow river traffic, which takes priority, through. Construction on the bridge was completed in 1894 and visitors today can stop off at its museum to see how the bridge was operated in the past, as well as enjoy the impressive views offered from its walkways.
