The Bill is a long-running British television police procedural, named after a slang term for the police.

The series was first broadcast on 16 August 1983 as a pilot episode; it became a regular series from 16 October 1984 and is still on screens today.

The Bill is set in and around Sun Hill police station, in the fictional London borough of Canley in East London.

As well as hundreds of extras, The Bill has a large regular cast; some members spend decades working on the series, and become synonymous with the characters they play.
