Founded on April 1st 1918 as an amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service, the RAF rapidly expanded in the years preceding the Second World War.
Its finest hour was perhaps the Battle of Britain in 1940 when 'the few' gallantly defended the Britain's skies against the Luftwaffe to foil Hitler's invasion plans.
