Using the Filters

To filter your results you can choose Personality, which will show only 'named' persons; actresses, models, politicians, writers, architects etc., or Non-Personality which will restrict the search to News, Features, Travel, Stock etc. and exclude celebrities.

You can also choose to 'Clear all filters' or 'Keep filters on' after each search.

If you are searching for 'personalities' you can refine your search by clicking Alone or With Others and Portrait or Full Length.

If the personality is a singer or musician you can also filter your results by choosing Performing or Not-Performing.

In addition, you can type Film Stills, Play, Premiere, Awards or Television Show yourself to show just those categories. Or add Posed or Studio to narrow your search even further.

Our Keywording rules

Personalities photographed Shopping, Crying or Skiing etc. are always keyworded with the -ing word ending.

Similarly, 'thematic' searches can be performed by searching for Star Smoking, Star Tattoo, Star Funny.

We always add the singular. So if there is one boat in the picture we keyword Boat, if there are two Boats, we keyword Boat and Boats.

When searching for performers whose names use common words, such as The Who, Prince or Take That or Pink, for example, add Music to your search to remove irrelevant results.

When searching for New York or London or any geographical location then using the Non-Personality filter excludes celebrity events. To see just 'travel' style images add the keyword Geography. Please note that we use America not USA and Britain not Great Britain.

Search with the keyword Stock to see a selection of generic images.

We also add these keywords as general subject headings: Animal, Art, Awards, Crime, Demonstration, Disaster, Fashion, Film Stills, Food, Geography, Glamour, Historical, Humour, Industry, Medical, Military, Music, Nostalgia, Play, Police, Premiere, Religion, Science, Sport, Stock, Television Show, Transport, War

Searches by date

You can search for dates using the three-letter format Jan, Feb, Mar etc. and the year as 2005, 2006, 2007 on all events and news stories.

You can also search by decade, like this; 1970s, 1980s, 1990s.

Special conditions

We add the keywords Model Released to all Model Released images. If it doesn't say it is Model Released then it isn't!
