A US-company is marketing its latest anti-mugging device at women who want to defend themselves AND look fashionable.

A cross between a Taser and pepper spray, the Avurt fires pellets filled with PAVA (Pelargonic Acid Vanillylamide) powder - a noxious substance that will burn the eyes, nose and throat of the target.

The USD$299 firearm can hurtle pellets at distances of up to 40 feet using the power of compressed nitrogen. And if you're not confident of hitting your target while under attack there is a handy laser-sight built-in.

It was designed as an alternative to mace or aerosol pepper spray and has the benefit of disabling attackers before they get close enough to do you harm.
